Olumide and Stephanie Aderinokun Foundation’s football competition tagged ‘Workers Unity Cup’ for artisan associations in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area kicked off on Wednesday at the NUD Primary School field in Owode-Egba.
Following the fanfare opening ceremony that had PDP House of Assembly Candidate in Obafemi-Owode State Constituency, Engr. John Tosin in attendance, Association of Carpenters and Association of Barbers battled for bragging rights and maximum points as they delivered a taste of enjoyment with their attractive football.
Both teams struggled to draw the first blood but the Carpenters’ resilience paid off with the only goal that secured maximum points for them in the second half.
The 1-0 win put them at the summit of Group A for two days until Association of Plumbers pummelled Shoemakers 3-0 on Friday evening.
The goal difference made the Plumbers overtake the Carpenters and the next Group A game is scheduled for Sunday, September 4 between Bricklayers and Carpenters.
In Group B, Association of Tailoring & Fashion Designers (ASTFAD) had an effortless 3-0 victory over Association of Lotto Operators.
The Lotto team failed to report for their opening fixture and it resulted in a walkover.
Thursday’s Group C outing between Motorcycle & Generator Mechanic Association (MOGEMA) and Association of Professional Drummers of Nigeria produced the first draw of the tournament with Oyewole Adebayo scoring a late equaliser for the Drummers in the 78th minute, to cancel Ogunbona Soliu’s 15th-minute opening goal.
It was another draw in Group D’s opening fixture as Tilers Association held Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) to a 1-1 draw.
Action continues on Saturday at the NUD Primary School field with Aluminium Association facing Tailors while Plank Sellers have scores to settle against Electricians later in the day.
